Catalan super club Barcelona are considering a move for Chelsea wingback Marcos Alonso as a potential replacement for Jordi Alba, according to the Guardian.
The La Liga giants are reportedly concerned about Jordi Alba’s recent poor form and are in the market for a replacement, perhaps as early as the January transfer window. Barcelona currently sit at the top of the Liga table, five points ahead of rivals Real Madrid, but the left back position has been identified as a weakness within the team, so much so that the club are interested in Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso.
The Spanish defender has racked up a fair few air miles throughout his career having played for Bolton, Fiorentina, Sunderland, Chelsea and, importantly, Real Madrid. Alonso made one appearance for Los Blancos at senior level having progressed through their academy. This doesn’t seem to trouble Real’s sworn rivals Barcelona however who have been impressed enough by the defender’s performances for Chelsea to overlook his white-shirted past.
Alonso contributed six goals and three assists to Chelsea’s title-winning season last year and has already found the back of the net twice this in this Premier League campaign. Barcelona are a side whose fullbacks play incredibly high up the pitch and Alonso could be a perfect fit if they are indeed looking to replace Jordi Alba.
