After a short period of utter dominance by their eternal rivals Real Madrid, Catalan super club Barcelona are back on track at the top of La Liga, and are turning their attention to maintaining their lead.
The Blaugrana are not only the highest scoring team in the Spanish top flight, but they also have the joint best defensive record. However, starting centre half Samuel Umtiti recently picked up an injury, and the legendary Lionel Messi has suggested that the club need to sign a replacement in January.
According to the Guardian, Matthijs De Ligt is the man that Barca want, and it’s easy to see why. The defender has started all 14 of Ajax’s Eredivisie games this season, despite being just 18-years of age, and has impressed many with his awareness and positioning.
Barcelona currently find themselves leading La Liga, leading second place Valencia by five points and rivals Real Madrid by eight points. The club are desperate to win the league this season to prevent Los Blancos from retaining it, and the addition of De Ligt should help ensure they continue their good form.
De Ligt was part of the Ajax squad that finished as runners-up in the Europa League last season, and thus already has a huge amount of experience. The move to Barcelona could accelerate the youngster’s career massively, and help him earn more caps for the Dutch national team.
