Manchester United winger Anthony Martial has been the subject of various rumours linking him with a move away from Old Trafford, the latest of which involves a swap deal with Catalan giants Barcelona. According to the Guardian the Frenchman will be swapped for Croatian midfielder Ivan Rakitic as Jose Mourinho seeks to strengthen United’s midfield.
The Red Devils are facing somewhat of an injury crisis in the middle of the park, with Paul Pogba and Marouane Fellaini currently sidelined and Michael Carrick set to retire at the end of the season. It is unsurprising then that Mourinho has been looking at various midfield options and Rakitic is the latest player to be linked with a move to the Manchester club as they look to challenge for the Premier League title.
The Croatian has won two La Liga titles and the Champions League during his time at Barcelona, and has been a crucial player in the heart of the Catalan club’s midfield. There is no denying Rakitic’s talent and with an impressive range of passing and a killer long shot he could be a great fit at Manchester United. However it is defensive midfield that is the real concern for Mourinho, which is not a position that the Croatian usually adopts, so it remains to be seen whether this deal will materialise.
